What is a red blood cell count?

Red blood cells carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body and bring carbon dioxide back out to be exhaled. What a high red blood cell count means

A low RBC count (anemia) means fewer red cells than expected, which usually means less oxygen reaching your tissues. The causes fall into a few groups. There is blood loss, such as heavy periods, gastrointestinal bleeding, surgery, or injury. There are nutritional shortfalls, most often low iron, vitamin B12, or folate. There is reduced production, from bone marrow suppression, chronic kidney disease (the kidneys make less of the hormone that signals red cell production), or long-running inflammation. And there is increased destruction, where cells break down faster than they are replaced. Pregnancy and fluid overload can also lower the count by dilution rather than by any real drop in cells.

Common symptoms are fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, cold hands and feet, and a faster heartbeat. Because the reasons range from simple iron deficiency to conditions that need treatment, a low result is usually followed up with iron studies, B12 and folate levels, and a look at the red cell indices to pinpoint the cause.

What affects your red blood cell levels

Plenty of everyday factors move the number without signaling any disease. Dehydration concentrates your blood and pushes the count up, while drinking a lot of fluid, or being pregnant, dilutes it and pushes it down. Living or training at high altitude raises it over time as your body adapts to thinner air. Smoking raises it. Testosterone therapy raises it, which is worth knowing if you are on hormone treatment.
